Introduction to WordPress at WordCamp Canada 2025 (#WCEH)

This session was originally delivered at WordCamp Canada 2025 during Contributor Day: https://canada.wordcamp.org/2025/session/intro-to-wordpress-part-one/

This session is designed for complete beginners, assuming they have little or no exposure to WordPress. Participants will be given a sandbox website (a place where they can play) if they don’t have their own hosting to use for the duration of WordCamp Canada to learn. We will discuss the common misconceptions around WordPress and some of the considerations that Canadians may need to be aware of when working with their websites, such as language differences and default settings. There is a lot of text and detail on these slides, and not much imagery. If I do them again, I’d probably do a lot more screenshots and include more images to make it more appealing. For transparency, I took a bunch of my previous presentations on this subject and ran them through an AI to better detail the steps that I would normally run through ad hoc, as well as check that my methods and details were up to date.

This presentation was followed by Introduction to the Dashboard at WordCamp 2025: https://canada.wordcamp.org/2025/session/into-the-dashboard/. You can view the slides for that here: https://shanta.ca/introduction-to-the-wordpress-dashboard-at-wordcamp-canada-2025-wceh/

I would really appreciate any feedback from this session or the other! I’m still working on the site here, so please feel free to reach out to me and let me know how you would make it better.
